Samhain is a cross-quarter sabbat; a night when the veil between this world and the next is the thinnest. It is a time to honor those who've died during the old year just leaving, as well as all ancestral spirits. [excerpt]

Samhain is the Celtic harvest festival which occurs on October 31 or November 1. It marked the ending of the fertile period of the year and the beginning of winter. During the winter period, it was believed that a path to "another world" was open, allowing spirits and such to visit people at night.

DEFINITION: Trick or Treat
intr.v. trick-or-treat·ed, trick-or-treat·ing, trick-or-treats
To engage in the practice of asking for treats on Halloween and threatening to play tricks on those who refuse.
The likely origin is the medieval custom of dressing in disguise and going door to door begging for food or coin. In some areas the begging was accompanied by threats to cause mischief.
The first recorded example in North America was in 1911, where a newspaper in Kingston, Ontario reported it in the Scottish form of "guising".

DEFINITION: Halloween Costume
Halloween costumes are costumes worn on or around Halloween, a festival which falls on October 31. The Halloween costume has a fairly short history. Wearing costumes has long been associated with other holidays around the time of Halloween, even Christmas.[1] Among the earliest references to wearing costumes at Halloween is in 1895, where "guisers" are recorded in Scotland,[2] but there is almost no mention of a costume in England, Ireland, or the United States until 1900.[3] Early costumes emphasized the pagan and gothic nature of the holiday, but by the 1930s costumes based on characters in mass media such as film, literature, and radio were popular. Halloween was originally promoted as a children's holiday, and as a means of reining in the licentious and destructive behavior of teenagers. Early Halloween costumes were aimed at children in particular, but after the mid-20th century, as Halloween increasingly came to be celebrated by adults, the Halloween costume was worn by adults as much as children.

2nd "Conservation" Linky: Share Your Halloween Tips & Tricks (or Treats!) , 10/21/11-10/27/11
Imagine that you live on a spaceship (because you do) traveling to the nearest extra-solar star* [OK, you're on a BIG spaceship orbiting the Sun...].
What would you take? How would you do things differently?
I'm Pam Hoffman and I was 'green' when it was still a color. I started making different decisions about my personal "Conservation" back in the 80s, I just always thought of it as 'spaceship thinking' so I reused, recycled, repurposed, composted and plain old did not get things as part of my daily routine.
I'm Jeff Miller. My parents went through the depression and WWII rationing so, I too, was raised to think of ways to reuse, recycle, and repurpose things. I do my bit to conserve resources but I'm not radical about it. In my own bit of "spaceship thinking," I've always felt that we've been tearing apart the life support system to repair the coffee maker. However, I'm a technophile so I think that our increasing understanding and innovations will eventually solve the problem. I just hope that there's something left to save.
Topic of the week:
This week, we are thinking about Halloween. When my daughter was young, we went to the local city Art Center and made costumes. We used paper mache which used up old newspapers and other materials rather than buying her costumes.
Those costumes were kind of a sore point with her at the time. I remember getting ready for Halloween being the time we got along best since we were working on a project for her together and these unique costumes always earned her compliments. Some of them even won prizes! She always had fun ideas like one year, she went as an erupting volcano!
