8th "Conservation" Linky: Share Ways That You Use Kitchen Appliance Parts in Other Ways, 12/2/11-12/8/11

I'm Pam Hoffman and I was 'green' when it was still a color. I started making different decisions about my personal "Conservation" back in the 80s, I just always thought of it as 'spaceship thinking' so I reused, recycled, re-purposed, composted and plain old did not get things as part of my daily routine.

I'm Jeff Miller. My parents went through the depression and WWII rationing so, I too, was raised to think of ways to reuse, recycle, and re-purpose things. I do my bit to conserve resources but I'm not radical about it. In my own bit of "spaceship thinking," I've always felt that we've been tearing apart the life support system to repair the coffee maker. However, I'm a technophile so I think that our increasing understanding and innovations will eventually solve the problem. I just hope that there's something left to save.

Topic of the week:

Have you ever salvaged some component or other from a Kitchen Appliance to use in some other capacity?

I'll give you an example.

I had a juicer once that met its end and, instead of just pitching the whole thing, I pulled it apart and saved a couple of things from it.

The catch basins were obvious - use them to carry liquids, as a vase for flowers, etc.

If my daughter had been at home still, I'd have opened up the motor and other electrical/electronic components to investigate.

CAUTION: If you are going to do something like this, do a little reading to understand ways to stay safe. I have a degree in Electronics Engineering Technology so I have the confidence to pull apart small appliances and fix them. You might not.

I pulled a few more things from this particular appliance though their usefulness was not quite as obvious.

There are some folks who won't touch leftovers. Personally, I think they are sometimes BETTER a day or two after they were originally cooked.

Since our friends in the USA are recovering from their holiday feast, I'm wondering - what do YOU like to do with your leftover turkey and other fixins?

I recall making soup with such leftovers (not reserved for this holiday alone!) and it's a good way to warm up on a cold day in November in Northern Ohio.

This week we will take a look at ways you like to shop for the holidays in relation to these 'conservation' areas.

Would you please share how You Shop for the Holidays? We used to go to a street fair in San Clements, CA every month to shop for gifts in December for the holidays. This was a fun outing and we were able to pay cash and gather what we needed over the months in preparation for the big celebrations!

Fall is a special time of the year. It some respects, it feels like a re-birth with return to school for some youths, though into a different class. Some parents get a little more time to themselves if they are normally 'stay at home' with their children.

And the festivities! There is nothing quite like the smells, the sights and sounds of Fall.

Each season brings its own special rituals too. I remember swapping my summer clothes for my fall and winter ones right around now, for many years, in my youth. There are probably some things which need to be done at this time which aren't the normal daily chores.

Would you please share your Best Ideas for Fall? I have turned clothes into scarves and made things for the Holiday tables from what might normally have been pitched. Any of these would qualify this week.

Topic of the week:

Sometimes, there really isn't a good way to reuse, recycle, up-cycle, etc. We just have to do something else with the stuff we produce - like throwing egg shells into the compost. This week, we're looking for creative ways to send your refuse to it's final resting place while avoiding actual landfills.

I'll give you an other example. I love molded Styrofoam. I have collected many pieces and used them for various sculptures and other things. I had one that I put out on the table, added water and a stem full of flowers, bougainvillea I think it was. I remember wondering 'will the Styrofoam hold water?' and then I thought of Styrofoam cups! Duh.

That's the sort of thing we're looking for this week. OH, egg shells can be used in the garbage disposer too I understand - helps scrape off the sides because it's abrasive.

This week, we are thinking about Halloween. When my daughter was young, we went to the local city Art Center and made costumes. We used paper mache which used up old newspapers and other materials rather than buying her costumes.

Those costumes were kind of a sore point with her at the time. I remember getting ready for Halloween being the time we got along best since we were working on a project for her together and these unique costumes always earned her compliments. Some of them even won prizes! She always had fun ideas like one year, she went as an erupting volcano!

"Have You Ever Been Stuck, With One Egg Yolk or One Egg White After Using a Recipe?"

"Where's My Other Half?" is the first book in the CoE (Conservation of Eggs) series designed to provide you with ways to USE that other half that's leftover from your original recipe.

There is a section of very simple things you can do, a bunch of recipes in the middle and some 'out there' ideas toward the end you can reference.

If you ever get stuck with one *or more* egg yolk or egg whites after working with a recipe, just pull out "Where's My Other Half?" flip through the pages until you find the chapter with your leftover type & number (1 thru 4 egg yolks or egg whites in this volume) then search for a recipe to 'Conserve' that Other Half!

We included a special section called "Noble Recipes" (recipes that use use equal numbers of yolks and whites in different places) for you as well.

Your Conservation of Eggs [CoE] Begins!

This all started because my mother refused to cook recipes that had yolks or whites left over. She considered it a waste. She wasn’t willing to search for recipes to pair together to use the leftover egg bits.

Pam Hoffman:
Jeff and I discussed this summer 2007 and “The Conservation of Eggs” was born. Soon thereafter we sought recipes which used one egg white or more then we started looking for recipes with one or more egg yolks.

The CoE Blog & Book Series:
This blog has recipes that contain one or more egg yolk, or egg white each, and a whole lot more!

The recipes posted here and in the book serve to help you with your leftover egg ‘halves.’ We will post two of each per month here on the CoE blog (some unique to the blog). If you want a whole bunch at once (and some that will be unique to the book), watch for the first book in the series: "Where's My Other Half? A Conservation of Eggs" coming to a Kindle, or Kindle app near you!

If you ever find yourself with one leftover egg white or egg yolk (or more) click on the number you have left in the upper right column of links on this site to find the quantity you need to use up and you’ll have a simple way to ‘Conserve YOUR Other Half’ when you might have wasted it in the past.

Some recipes keep the egg parts separated and they use them in different parts of the same recipe, though they are equal. We call these the “Noble Recipes" and they will be gathered together under that label here, and in the chapter of the same name in each of the books.

The first CoE book is set to publish by the end of Summer, 2011. We'll let you know when it's ready, and where to get it.
